Bio: Back in 1880, a poor farmer named Harris Barnum living in Colorado was struggling to make ends meet. His farm was never prosperous and he only had enough to feed himself and his poor wife, Wilhelmina. Times were getting rough for them and, with winter coming on, the couple were certain that they would have to sell the farm or starve.
Then, one day, an ancient shaman traveling the land came upon their farm. He was hungry, thirsty, and needed a place to rest his weary bones. The Barnums, though poor, were good Samaritans, so they took the shaman in and fed him, clothed him, and gave him a room for the night. When they went to check on him the next morning, they found that he was gone, leaving with them an old ring and a mauve lantern.
Harris, curious, approached the lantern, only for a deep voice to come booming out, its words echoing in his and his wife's minds. It told them that it was originally a star that fell to Earth but, after many centuries and taking on many forms, had become what sat before the Barnums. Each owner felt their minds altered, cleared and filled with the answers they needed to solve their problems. The last owner before the shaman was a poet in Britain who felt enlightened when he touched the lantern, so he carved a ring from the lantern that he might carry it with him at all times.
To see if it would work, Harris put the ring on his hand and held it to the lantern as the voice commanded. Instantly, he saw what he needed to do to save his farm and give his wife what he wanted. He went out and used the ring to find just the right spot in the ground and, with a little digging, he uncovered a hidden reserve of black oil. As the black gold trickled from the ground, Harris danced with Wilhelmina, knowing all their problems were solved.
Cut to the 21st century, when a young writer came into a great inheritance upon his father's death. He was not given any money or property, but rather, a faded, dusty lantern and ring made of a mauve metal. He took the items and received the same message that Harris did, freeing his mind from the writer's block that had plagued it. Now, he sought to spread his genius to the world, one book at a time!
