Meta Abilities
Mari is what’s sometimes called a ‘biotech’. Her right side was crushed almost fifty years ago and she was partially rebuilt as a sort of cyborg. The breaks in her arm and leg (which were numerous) were patched with lightweight rustproof alloy plates. Weight stabilizing counter-weights were placed in her right arm and leg to keep her skeletal system balanced. All of her right-side ribs were replaced, along with the right half of her hip and the outermost region of her skull, also on the right side. As a result, her bones are harder to break in all of these places, although the rest remain vulnerable.
The majority of the organs on her right were replaced with identical organs molded out of a permeable plastic that mimicked the properties of the originals as closely as possible. Her veins, tendons and muscles were crafted from a similar plastic that was less permeable in both cases. The synthetic muscles were stronger than the originals, in addition to her already extremely fit nature, making her abnormally strong. The muscles on her left were largely replaced in order to match the right’s improvements, although the veins and tendons remained normal. This also left her somewhat faster than normal humans, but only when she has enough room and time to pick up speed. In short bursts she is no faster than any fit person. Long-distance she can reach speeds of thirty-miles per hour. Her reflexes are also faster on her right side.
Small parts of Mari’s brain were replaced by an extremely porous plastic tissue made from molds of a healthy brain. A chip was added that allowed Mari to connect to the Internet and if she desires, and to download information into her brain. Her right eye was replaced with a synthetic, loaded with camera and extremely thin video-interfaces.
Last but not least Mari’s blood was supplemented with microscopic robots. These nanobots are programmed to produce the enzymes red and white blood cells produce, enabling them to interact with the original organs and tissues. Beyond this basic function they are capable of increasing healing rates by repairing damage and stimulating marrow to produce more blood cells. They can also replace or replicate other enzymes and cells throughout the body.
Natural Abilities
Mari is extremely fit and practices many fighting techniques, from Tai Chi and Judo to pole fighting, kick boxing and munitions, with many more less-known additions. She has a vast knowledge of weapons and is proficient with over a hundreds.
//Weaknesses
Her left side is as vulnerable to damage as any typical human, and it is marginally slower than her right side. The nanobots require much more energy than normal bloodcells, and thus Mari must eat at least her weight on a normal day to remain healthy. Not eating this amount will result in something akin to low blood sugar, including slowly increasing fatigue, crankiness, and disorientation. At first the results are marginal, but by the end of one day without food she typically is shaking and exhausted. By the end of a second day without food she is completely incapacitated. However. The nanobots can and do remove any poisons from her system, so she can gain nutrients from more sources than most people. She does not have allergies, and finds it extremely difficult to get drunk.
Because her blood is supplemented by nanobots, and there are minor mechanical implants in her eye and brain, she is very vulnerable to EMPs, electrical pulse or currents, and strong magnetic forces. This means that even some small shocks (The sort that would leave a human tingling but unharmed) can 'reset' or temporarily black out any of these organs. A severe shock can result in days or even weeks of unconsciousness.
Mari is far from diplomatic, and is often out of place in any sort of sophisticated gathering. While she is not clumsy verbally or physically, she isn’t particularly gifted in either of the aspects either. She tends to intimidate immediately, making it very hard to gather information subtly. She also weighs more and stands taller than the ordinary person, meaning that it is difficult or impossible for her to cross say, a wooden bridge, or crawl through a small space.
//Background
Mari was born from an illicit liaison between a married general in the army and a dancer, Jeanne Thompson in the early nineteen twenties. Though pregnancy was accidental, Jeanne saw an opportunity in the child. She and the general had been having an affair for a few months, during which the general had provided Jeanne with expensive gifts and hotel rooms in which to stay, but he was quickly loosing interest. Dancing was a hard life, and often not very profitable. Jeanne saw a way to turn her baby into an easier way of life. She gambled, hoping the general would want to know his offspring, or at the very least would want to keep said offspring secret. Thus she allowed her relationship with the general to fade as she carried her baby to term.
It was a dim, cold December morning in nineteen thirty-two when Jeanne felt the first pangs of contractions. As she went into labor she contacted the general and informed him about his unborn child, along with a demand for money in exchange for her silence about his affair. The general was apathetic. He informed Jeanne that he could care less about her or the baby, and that she would have a very hard time proving he was the father. None-the-less, the desperate Jeanne had his name placed on the birth certificate as the father of her child. She hoped that he was bluffing, and eventually he would give in and start supporting herself and the baby.
Five years of fruitless waiting later, General Gray still had not paid up, and the pregnancy had left Jeanne out of shape and unable to find work as a dancer. Marianna and her mother found themselves on the streets, where Jeanne turned to drink and eventually Opium as a way to cope. Marianna quickly found herself fending for herself in the mean streets of New York.
The only gift Marianna had from her father was her abnormal height and heartiness. Already she found herself towering above the other children, which enabled her to fend off most dangers. In addition, she inherited the ability to dance from her mother. This gift garnered Marianna small jobs throughout her childhood and into her teens.
On the day she turned Sixteen, Marianna applied to the Julliard School of Dance. To her surprise and shock, she was accepted with a scholarship. The following two years were the happiest of her life. With food and lodging provided for her, all Marianna had to do was dance. It was hard, but much better than any other life Marianna had ever known. It couldn’t last though.
Two years later, an even more talented and equally impoverished young lady earned Marianna’s scholarship. Without any means to pay, Marianna quickly found herself back out on the streets. Now, however, she was eighteen. An adult of abnormal height and outfitted with a dancer’s muscles and swiftness she found herself some work as a hired muscle, despite initial skepticism by the local ruffians. She picked up fighting skills as quickly as she had choreography. Eventually she found herself working for the Mafia… and then, one cloudy morning, she was recruited by a military organization overseas. Mari jumped at the chance to leave the smoke and chauvinism of the mafia life behind.
It turned out the military organization was almost as chauvinistic as her previous employers. The only advantage Mari found in their service was access to a small temple of monks. Some of these monks took pity on Marianna and taught her the art they called Tai Chi. She excelled at this, and as she learned and thrived with their teachings she learned the art of munitions from her day job. She left the militia less than a year after joining their ranks and fell into the mercenary life.
She earned a living like this for the next twelve years, literally fighting for the money for a home and some food.
Mari was thirty-two when she died on a battlefield in a remote, third-world country. A career soldier and an orphan, Mari had no children, no romantic ties, and the majority of her friends had predeceased her. Because she was largely alone in the world she had signed her body over for the purposes of research. A very secretive military contractor that had a facility in the area purchased the rights to the body as soon as the death certificate was signed.
The company was working on a new projected they called the Golem series. Scientists had begun developing a revolutionary cyborg-like process to re-animate recently deceased soldiers using bio-synthetic parts and chemical-electrical stimulation to revive the brain. Mari was one of the first ten deceased trails. She was also one of the project’s first successes.
When Mari awoke the doctors informed her that she had been in an accident, and that several operations had been carried out to save her life. They also informed her that the operations had been extremely expensive, and she was now heavily in debt to them for the cost of the surgeries and many implants. She found she had no choice but to do as they asked, and soon found herself relearning to walk and move.
For the next thirty years Marianna lived, trained and fought on their command in more wars and ways than she could count. The organization trained her and sold her abilities to the highest bidder. Finally, in nineteen ninety-two, Mari realized that she had long since paid off her debt. She removed herself from their employee—forcibly—and found herself once more unemployed. This time, she joined the army.
Once again she found herself almost happy, serving with and under men she could truly appreciate. It wasn’t long, though, before the army picked up on the fact that was far, far from normal. Eventually she found herself reassigned to a small ‘special forces unit’ that consisted of herself. Suddenly she found herself deployed against things she had only dreamed of. Mythical beasts, aliens, ancient gods and races from other dimensions.
It was here the Loner found her true calling. She has remained in her tiny special ops program ever since.
